Apprenticeship Training

SAFETY

All NOJAC apprentices must attend Accident Prevention Education Program (APEP), Working at Heights, WHMIS 2015/Global Harmonized System and HILTI safety training prior to being dispatched to work by the IBEW. A variety of additional safety courses are offered to NOJAC apprentices through the IBEW during their apprenticeship.

SCHOOLING

In addition to the practical training provided on the job under the direction of a skilled electrician, NOJAC apprentices must successfully complete three levels of schooling. At appropriate times during the apprenticeship, the MAESD offers seats to apprentices in approved colleges in Ontario. The curriculum may include, but is not limited to the following topics:

  • codes, legislation and regulations
  • blueprints, drawings and specifications
  • trade communication and documentation
  • electrical theory, wiring, motor starters and controls
  • transformers, generators, electronics
  • conductors and cables
  • installation methods
  • instrumentation and power distribution
  • fire alarm and building systems, high voltage systems, control systems
  • electrical equipment maintenance
  • job planning
  • grounding and bonding
  • distribution equipment
  • protective devices

Ongoing Training

IBEW Local 1687 encourages members to improve and update their current skillset.
